Position: Public Safety Radio Technologist Division: Strategy and Transformation Department: Digital Technology Term: 1 Permanent Full Time position available. Job Summary Reporting to the Electronic Communications Coordinator, the Public Safety Radio Technologist is responsible for installing, maintaining, and supporting the City’s Motorola ASTRO® 25 P25 trunked radio system and associated communication infrastructure. This role ensures reliable communications for emergency services and civic operations. Duties & Responsibilities Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the City’s Motorola ASTRO® 25 P25 trunked radio system, including infrastructure components and system configuration to ensure reliable operation. Monitor system performance using diagnostic tools and perform testing, troubleshooting, and repairs to maintain high system availability, and ensure compliance with licensing, regulatory requirements, and communication standards. Configure and maintain interoperability solutions, including shared talkgroups, gateways, and inter-system interfaces to ensure seamless communication across departments and external partners. Support identification of operational issues and system improvements. Apply established security practices to support the integrity and availability of the radio system, including user access controls, secure configuration, patching, and basic network protection measures, and assist in identifying and reporting potential vulnerabilities or security incidents. Maintain and troubleshoot microwave, fibre optic, and supporting network systems to ensure system reliability and connectivity. Install, configure, and maintain mobile and portable communication systems, including radios, in-vehicle equipment, and associated technologies supporting emergency response operations. Test, maintain, and replace battery backup systems and UPS, and support maintenance of related communications equipment required for system continuity. Assist with system upgrades, including hardware replacement, software updates, site expansion activities, and lifecycle replacement. Provide technical support for system configuration and troubleshooting and coordinate with vendors to resolve technical issues and access support services. Maintain accurate records of system configurations, maintenance activities, and troubleshooting, and prepare reports to support documentation and regulatory compliance. Attend training, conferences, and technical sessions to remain current with system advancements and industry practices. Adhere to health and safety requirements and City policies, ensuring safe operation of equipment and contributing to a respectful, positive workplace culture. Contribute to team member development through knowledge sharing, training support, and collaboration. Participate in standby rotation and respond in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Requirements Diploma in Electronic Systems Engineering Technology or a related discipline from an accredited institution. Certification, or eligibility for certification, as a Professional Technologist or Certified Technician with the Technology Professionals Saskatchewan Association. Minimum of four years' experience in public safety radio communications systems. Motorola-certified ASTRO® 25 P25 system training is considered an asset. Experience with in-vehicle communication systems for emergency services is an asset. Experience with microwave and fibre optic communications is an asset. Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s License and clean SGI driver’s abstract. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Basic knowledge of IP networking and radio system backhaul technologies is an asset. Demonstrable knowledge of Motorola ASTRO® 25 P25 trunked radio systems, including system design, functionality, and maintenance practices. Skilled in using radio system test and monitoring equipment (e.g., service monitors, spectrum analyzers) and software-based diagnostic tools for troubleshooting and system analysis. Demonstrable knowledge of radio protocol standards, regulatory compliance, and public safety communication principles. Strong foundation in RF theory, antenna systems, site linking, and radio frequency planning. Competent in using radio programming tools and maintaining accurate system configuration documentation. Demonstrable knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, Microsoft 365, and virtual environments (e.g., VMware), along with network infrastructure supporting radio backhaul and diagnostics. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure. Demonstrable knowledge of cybersecurity principles as applied to radio communications systems and supporting network infrastructure. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders and contribute to a supportive, safety-focused team environment. Requires Security Check Ability to pass the Saskatoon Police Service security clearance process. Additional Requirements Ability to travel, including internationally for vendor training or certification. Physically capable of performing assigned duties, including working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in varied conditions. Normal colour vision is required.
