Position: Senior Public Safety Radio Technologist Division: Strategy and Transformation Department: Digital Technology Term: 1 Permanent Full Time position available. Job Summary Reporting to the Electronic Communications Coordinator, the Senior Public Safety Radio Technologist serves as the City’s technical authority for the Motorola ASTRO® 25 P25 trunked radio system and associated infrastructure. The role provides advanced technical expertise, coordinates and prioritizes day-to-day technical work, and mentors staff to ensure system reliability, regulatory compliance, and long-term sustainability, while actively participating in system installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities as required. Duties & Responsibilities Provide technical leadership for the configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Motorola ASTRO® 25 P25 trunked radio system and associated infrastructure, including resolution of complex system issues and maintaining configuration standards. Oversee system performance using diagnostic tools and support resolution of complex or recurring issues impacting system availability, including direct involvement in troubleshooting activities as needed. Ensure compliance with licensing, regulatory requirements, and communication standards. Lead the configuration and optimization of interoperability solutions and support resolution of cross-system and operational communication issues across departments and external partners. Provide technical guidance on security practices, including secure configuration, access control, patching, and vulnerability mitigation, and support implementation where required. Provide technical guidance and support for the maintenance and optimization of microwave, fibre optic, and supporting network systems, and assist with troubleshooting and repair activities as needed. Provide technical standards and guidance for installation, configuration, and maintenance of mobile, portable, and in-vehicle communication systems, and support complex or specialized installations as required. Provide oversight of power systems, including battery backup and UPS lifecycle practices, to ensure system reliability and continuity. Support and help lead system upgrades, including hardware replacement, software updates, and system expansion activities, and actively participate in implementation activities as required to ensure successful execution. Coordinate and prioritize day-to-day technical work activities, providing direction on task assignment, sequencing, and technical approach based on system priorities and operational requirements. Act as an escalation point for complex technical issues, providing advanced troubleshooting and resolution support and participating directly in issue resolution as required. Serve as the primary technical liaison with vendors to support issue resolution, system support activities, and lifecycle planning. Ensure accuracy of system documentation and establish and maintain configuration standards to support system integrity and compliance. Attend training, conferences, and technical sessions to remain current with system advancements and industry practices, and leverage this knowledge to anticipate industry direction, inform system planning and lifecycle decisions, and identify innovative solutions to existing and emerging operational challenges. Adhere to health and safety requirements and City policies, ensuring safe operation of equipment while contributing to a respectful, positive workplace culture. Provide technical mentorship and guidance to team members and support team development through knowledge sharing, training support, and collaboration. Participate in standby rotation and respond in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures, providing technical support for complex or escalated issues as required. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Requirements Diploma in Electronic Systems Engineering Technology or a related discipline from an accredited institution. Certification, or eligibility for certification, as a Professional Technologist or Certified Technician with the Technology Professionals Saskatchewan Association. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public safety radio communications systems, including advanced troubleshooting and support of complex, multi-site system environments. Motorola-certified ASTRO® 25 P25 system training is considered a significant asset. Experience working with RF systems, interoperability solutions, and communications infrastructure, including supporting system upgrades, lifecycle replacement, and ongoing optimization. Experience with microwave, fibre optic, and IP-based networking and backhaul systems supporting system connectivity, performance, and diagnostics is an asset. Experience with in-vehicle communication systems for emergency services is an asset. Experience providing technical guidance, coordinating technical work activities, and contributing to technical decision-making in a team environment is considered an asset. Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s License and clean SGI driver’s abstract. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Advanced, in-depth expertise in the Motorola ASTRO® 25 P25 trunked radio system, including system architecture, design, functionality, maintenance practices, and lifecycle considerations. Skilled in using radio system test and monitoring equipment, including service monitors, spectrum analyzers, and software-based diagnostic tools, to diagnose and resolve complex, system-level issues. Demonstrable knowledge of radio protocol standards, regulatory compliance, and public safety communication principles, with the ability to interpret and apply standards in complex operational scenarios. Demonstrable knowledge of RF theory, antenna systems, site linking, and radio frequency planning across multi-site and mission-critical environments. Skilled in radio programming tools and establishing and maintaining configuration standards to ensure system accuracy, consistency, and integrity. Demonstrable knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, Microsoft 365, virtual environments (e.g., VMware), and network infrastructure supporting radio backhaul, diagnostics, and system performance. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to resolve complex, non-routine, or high-impact technical issues under pressure. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders, provide technical guidance, and contribute to a supportive, safety-first team environment. Ability to coordinate and prioritize technical work activities, provide direction on technical approach, and support team development through mentorship and knowledge sharing. Requires Security Check Ability to pass the Saskatoon Police Service security clearance process. Additional Requirements Ability to travel, including internationally for vendor training or certification. Physically capable of performing duties, including working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in varied conditions. Normal color vision is required.
